Carrie Schneider @ the MCA!

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

While I am trying to keep this blog strictly Biggie-related, I just have to post something about my friend, Carrie Schneider.  You see, she is an amazing artist (my other post about her is here), and has her latest work for viewing at the MCA in Chicago.  She is the featured artist for this month’s 12 x 12 exhibition!

Mohop by you.

Annie Mohaupt, founder and designer of Mohop shoes is up for a $10,000 prize from Ideal Bite.  Mohop makes the best eco-friendly handmade shoes right in Chicago.  This will give her the opportunity to buy new machines and tools… and to just grow her fabulous business!

We’re turning to you, oh trusted Biter (aka Ideal Bite subscriber), to select our first-ever Next in Green award winner for the 2008 Best in Green (B.I.G.) Awards. This special category recognizes an up-and-coming eco-preneur doing extraordinary things; i.e.: the world would be a much better place if they succeed. To that end, they will receive a $10,000 cash award to help bring their great, green ideas to the mainstream market.

You must be an Ideal Bite subscriber to vote, but don’t worry if you’re not – we’ll give you a chance to subscribe at the end. You can vote only once. Just read through the nominees, choose your fave, enter your email address and hit “Cast Your Vote”. Happy voting*.

Handmade Nation Book

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Last night we hopped up to Milwaukee to meet friends for dinner then stopped by Cafe Lulu in Bayview.  Lulu was hosting a book release party for Handmade Nation: The Rise of DIY, Art, Craft and Design.  Co-author Faythe Levine is very active in the craft community – organizing Art vs. Craft, running her shop Paper Boat Boutique and finishing up her documentary (which the book is based on and due to be released next year).

Handmade Nation Book by you.

The book discusses the ‘new wave of craft’ with interviews from artists and crafters across the country.  I haven’t read it from front to back yet, but I am very impressed so far.  Oh, you can purchase it here!

After a year-long Fulbright Fellowship to the prestigious Finnish
Academy of Fine Arts
in Helsinki, Carrie Schneider returns to Chicago
with a body of new work for her first solo exhibition with
moniquemeloche gallery. Schneider sets up impossible scenarios that
pit a character (usually herself) against some force of nature.
Through a complex web of personal mythologies, Schneider throws
herself into fantasies of escape and concealment, creating uneasy
resonances with simple juxtapositions.  The result is a series of
large-scale photographs and two 16mm films that continue to heighten
the familiar to a level of precarious strangeness.
